A variety of student designers contribute to our Fall and Spring fashion shows. Some study Architecture, some study English, and some had never touched a sewing machine prior to working with FAST!
If you’re interested in designing for our upcoming Fall 2008 show, just send an email to Helen or Terra at calfastdesigners@gmail.com. No prior experience necessary!
Bebee is currently a second year, English major & Julia is a second year, Molecular Cell Biology major at UC Berkeley. “Fashion has always been a passion of mine and as a kid I would sew just for fun. Sometimes my mom would get a little angry when I would use what I thought were cast off clothes into any variety. Though we may not end up pursuing careers in the fashion industry, we believe in the clothing’s ability to evoke strong impressions and emotions in people and hope to continue designing and sewing regardless.” – BeBee & Julia
JiEun is currently a second year, Architecture major at UC Berkeley. “One of many things that I wanted to do before I graduate Berkeley was participating in F.A.S.T. Designing the dresses was fun, but it was challenging to actually materialize it. Although it was difficult, I really enjoyed the process and getting to know all the other talented designers and devoted officers.” – JiEun
Aalia is currently a fourth year, Political Economy of Industrial Societies major at UC Berkeley. “As a young girl, I learned to sew from a family members after spending a summer in Pakistan. I spent hours making clothing for dolls and developed an interest in fashion. I have always been very creative and fashion design has been a great way to express my creativity and personality.” - Aalia
May is currently a second year, English major at UC Berkeley. “I have always had an interest in fashion but it really grew when I worked for a dress designer during the past summer. The experience made me realize how exciting of an industry fashion is and the designer really inspired me to try to design. In the future, I would like to be either a fashion journalist or designer.” – May
Virginie Suos is currently a third year, Business major at UC Berkeley. Before pursuing her education in the United States, she grew up in Paris, France where shopping at the “Galeries Lafayettes” and “Forum des Halles” was by far, her favorite activity. Virginie currently does not have much experience in fashion design, but her passion for fashion drove her to join the Fashion And Student Trends (FAST) club at UC Berkeley this semester. She hopes to learn and develop the technical skills that will allow her to design and bring a Parisian-chic style to the Spring 08 Fashion show.
Marya is a fourth year, Comparative Literature and French major at UC Berkeley who has been sketching designs instead of taking notes in class since high school. This will be her sixth collection and fourth year designing for F.A.S.T. The inspiration for her collection is a mélange of the fashion of the “Nouvelle Vague” of French cinema in the 1960s and the fashion of New Wave musicians in the 1980s. After graduating from Berkeley in May she will be attending the Academy of Art University in San Francisco in pursuit of a Master of Fine Arts in Fashion Design.
Katy is a fourth year, Practice of Art major at UC Berkeley. “I have always loved sketching different dress designs, but the first time I made these designs into reality was through last year’s show. It was always exciting to see how these designs change and evolve after I create them, and I look forward to hopefully creating my own fashion line and boutique one day.” – Katy
Paul is a third year, English major at UC Berkeley. “I recently became interested in fashion and decided to pick up sewing as another hobby. I have been engaged in the arts since a young age. In the future, I hope to teach English, write poetry and short fiction, and open up a restaurant and bakery.” - Paul
Lesley is currently a fourth year, Architecture major at UC Berkeley. “I like fashion because it is design that is displayed in our everyday lives and travels nicely. I am pursuing architecture and I hope to make a living in the design world. I dedicate my final collection at Berkeley to those who have meant so much to me these past flying years, I deeply thank you.” – Lesley
Christine is currently a second year, French major at UC Berkeley. She will be going to Paris next year to continue her French studies, where she hopes to learn more about fashion as well. “I have always had an interest in fashion, and F.A.S.T. provided the perfect opportunity to initiate fashion designing. I was inspired by bright pop colors and fun urban wear for my first collection.” - Christine
Ali is currently a first year, Mass Communications major at UC Berkeley. “I first wanted to become a fashion designer when I was 13, but was discouraged. Barbies sparked the initial interest in style and I always found myself going into stores but then realized that only I could design what I wanted. This is my first collection and although it may be a little rough, I had an amazing time producing each dress, even with the machine jammed! In the future, I want to actively work in the fashion industry either for PR or was a journalist.” – Ali
Ella is currently a third year, Public Health major, and Zara is currently a third year, Sociology major at UC Berkeley. “We are designers with an eclectic style where vintage intersects with bohemian and modern. We are inspired by street fashion trends as well as high fashion and aim to create chic clothes that are still wearable. We <3 fashion because it is an outlet of creativity expressed through clothing.” – Ella & Zara
Theresa is a second year, Landscape Architecture major at UC Berkeley. “Since I can remember, I change my outfit five times a day. I couldn’t help it even if I tried. Ask me, why fashion? I say, because it is a superficial representation of how we want the world to perceive us. It’s about total control of image. And it is totally overrated but I still love it. However, my designs are as much about the body as the image. The body is the most beautiful and intimate canvas, and I want my clothing to compel the experience of the body…” – Theresa
